Professional Guidance Cell - A helping hand to the deserving peoples
The Malayalee community in Florida enjoys the rare privilege of living in a region which is very similar to our land of origin - Kerala. There is an 'at home' feeling over here, though we are thousands of miles away from home. As a result of our hard work, dedication and sacrifice we have been blessed in great abundance.
However, behind this success story lies a totally different scenario. Individuals, especially the new arrivals face a wide range of problems. Among other things, they are troubled by problems of high reputation in Kerala and family pressures. The color of their skin, the culture of the mother country, the strangeness of their English accent and the differences in the value system raise real anxieties. They are lost between two entirely different worlds of culture and civilization.
Immigrating to a new country is a turbulent and difficult experience. Upon arrival in the USA they need to address the basics; finding an affordable place to live, a survival job to pay the bills, schools for their children, etc. Owing to misinformation or lack of proper guidance many of the young, talented and highly qualified people end up doing odd jobs with poor income. There is the instance of a job seeker with a PhD who worked as a part-time cashier at a grocery shop! Another with years of experience in finance was working as a house keeping person at a motel.
Kairali leadership is actually aware of the problems and the ensuring tension it creates in the personalities of the concerned people. It is true that the capitalistic work culture over here and our so called socialistic, unionized work culture back in our country have different implications. Yet we cannot stop asking this pursuing question to ourselves; "if they are so qualified why can't they find a decent paying job in this land of opportunities?"
We at Kairali, understand that the main barrier to good employment for our well qualified people is the absence of having appropriate professional Network. The lack of knowledge of getting proper information and guidance about various job opportunities in government agencies and other professional sectors make them take decision of changing career, leaving behind years of professional experience they enjoyed.
Kairali Arts Club has therefore, decided to form a Professional Guidance Cell consisting a panel of outstanding men and women who have made enviable stride in their professional life and a substantial contributions to the corporate life of Malayalee community in the State of Florida.
